Description Richard Fields – ‘Dimples’ The Albums 1980-1985

Included are the albums Dimples, Mr Look So Good, Give Everybody Some, MMM… and Dark Gable. The collection opens with Dimples, the first album Fields recorded after signing with Boardwalk Records under the guidance of industry heavyweight Neil Bogart, previously the driving force behind Casablanca Records. After being spotted on American Bandstand, Bogart recognised Fields’ crossover potential and positioned him for a broader mainstream audience beyond his earlier cult independent releases.

One of the most talked-about tracks on Dimples is She’s Got Papers on Me, a lush, emotionally rich soul ballad with sweeping backing vocals and a heartfelt lead performance. Beneath its smooth surface lies a sharply ironic lyric, making it one of Fields’ most memorable recordings, despite never being released as a single.

The follow-up album Mr Look So Good marked a major breakthrough, driven by the hit If It Ain’t One Thing It’s Another, which reached number one on the US R&B chart and crossed over into the Billboard Top 50. Success continued with Give Everybody Some, featuring fan favourites such as People Treat You Funky (When Ya Ain’t Got No Money) and Don’t Ever Stop Chasing Your Dreams.

After leaving Boardwalk, Fields signed with RCA and released MMM…, an album that showcased a more polished, uptempo sound. The standout track Your Wife Is Cheatin’ on Us received strong label support and peaked at number 32 on the R&B chart. His next album Dark Gable saw him recording under the name Dimples, with the energetic Shake ’Em Down emerging as a highlight.

This triple CD set is completed with in-depth sleeve notes by music journalist Joe Marchese, offering valuable insight into Fields’ career, recordings and legacy. Digitally remastered and thoughtfully curated, this collection is an essential release for fans of classic 80s R&B, soul and modern funk, and a fitting tribute to Richard “Dimples” Fields, who sadly passed away in January 2000 following a stroke.
