Funk Revival - Sounds From The Sub-Tropics
Incredible funk from the Miami scene -- most of it done with heavily Cuban roots! The tracks here are mostly from the wonderful Sound Triangle label -- a tiny Florida imprint that focused on capturing sounds that were neither funk nor soul, jazz nor Latin -- but a unique hybrid of all their best elements -- brought to Florida by ex-patriot Cubans, and simmered down into a wicked new blend! There's a sharpness here that's really wonderful -- a heavily percussive quality on most numbers that rivals the best funky 45s from up north at the time -- but which also has plenty of Latin touches too, as you'd hear on some of the most soulful sides from Fania, or the growing Chicano scene in LA.
A few of the names here are familiar from important reissues over the years, but the set's also overflowing with a lot more lesser-known gems as well -- a whole new territory in funky music, with tremendous tracks all the way through!
